For those who may not know me, my name is Carolyn Tripp – recent graduate of 2015 from Purdue’s School of Nursing, and Gamma Pi Initiation class of Spring 2013. I have been serving on Gamma Pi Alumni Association’s Board of Directors since the fall of 2015 and took up the position of Chairwoman in the spring of this year. I play the trumpet, I served in the student leadership in the All-American Marching Band, Boiler Box Band, and Gold and Black Sound, as well as in a couple leadership positions in the undergraduate chapter. I had the privilege to attend KKPsi Conventions at the District and National levels during my four years, as well.
During the most recent meeting of the Association during Homecoming weekend on October 15th, some major constitutional changes were voting on by those members present. Those changes were the dissolution of the Board of Directors and the suspension of dues, and the associated wording for each. Governing the Association is the executive council that was already in place alongside the Board of Directors. Those already holding office prior to these changes will continue to hold their office with the exception of Ben Murphy, who chose to step down from the office of President to Member at Large. The leadership and their roles are as follows:
Carolyn Tripp – President
Chris Jacobus – Vice President
Jason Mlady – Vice President for Programs
Bob Finkbeiner – Secretary
Tom Mesich – Treasurer
Scott Kubly – Member at Large
Ben Murphy – Member at Large
David Robinson – Member at Large
During the past several months, Jason Mlady has done wonderful work to get a beautiful new website up and running for us! It will be our new way of keeping track of the membership and contact information. It takes just a few minutes of your time to sign up and the system will remind you yearly to update your information to make sure you still want to be a part of the Association. Once you’ve signed up, you will be able to find information on the leadership for the Association as well as Gamma Pi. Gamma Pi’s Alumni Secretary has access to this website and will soon be posting the Alumni Darts directly to it. I will let you all explore the rest of it for yourselves – it is super easy!
Now, I was approached by several members with concerns since we sent out these changes. The hope is that we will draw young alumni into the Association to promote further participation in this great fraternity beyond the college years. One way to do that is to remove the dues necessity. Now, we do have the website set up for donations, so if that is something you want to do please continue to give. This way the door is completely open for all of those wishing to participate. It is the hope that as the new alumni become old alumni, they will be able to start donating and so keep our involvement in several endowments for Purdue Bands and Orchestras present.
Looking to the future, I have high hopes for this organization. I want to help us get back to the reason we joined this fraternity in the first place – brotherhood and musicianship. This means encouraging our members to also become dues-paying members of the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association, attending District Convention in the spring if you are able to do so, or taking a vacation to Orlando next summer and stopping by National Convention! The more we involve ourselves with the fraternity as alumni, the closer ties we can make with Gamma Pi. In the next couple years, I would love to start a program to sponsor a BIT to District Convention where you get to know one of the newest brothers instead of just giving the chapter money.
These are just some of the things I have thought about for the future of this Association and I am sure with your help we can come up with more!
Please reach out to me with any further questions, concerns, comments.
